Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it.” And he was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven (Gen 28:16-17)

The first mention of Bethel in the bible is when Abraham pitched the tent and built an altar to the Lord and he worshiped the Lord (Gen 12:8). The altar is a sanctified area in the house of God where sacrifices are offered to the Lord. It is where the presence of God dwells.

In our opening scripture above, we learn that Joseph was asleep and he woke up from his sleep and discovered himself being in the presence of the Lord. During his sleep, he saw a staircase starting from the earth and its top reached the heaven (Gen 28:12). Bethel was named by Jacob; its original name is Luz. The word Bethel means the house of God. This is where a man must build God’s house first and worship. In Bethel you learn to have an intimacy with God; you hunger for His presence is developed here (Ps 122:1).

As you lay in the altar, this is where visions and dreams are delivered and converted into the reality. In Bethel, it is where you receive a clear vision concerning your calling and the vision of the house of God that you must build. In Bethel, you learn to wrestle with God until your case is resolved (Gen 32:22-28). Here you put God first and desire to build a house that attracts the angels of God. Here you learn to be sensitive to your spirit about the matters of the Kingdom. This is where your spiritual eyes and insight are opened. Here you offer yourself first as a living sacrifice.

O Lord, help me to pass in Bethel, I want to build a house for you. As I lay into your Holy presence, please appear to me; show me my dreams, my vision and a direction concerning my life and my ministry in Jesus name. Create in me a clean heart, remove the stubborn heart of stone and put a new heart of the spirit that will obey you and abide by your statutes, in Jesus’s name I pray. Amen.
